We will try to give a brief introduction to ASPs, their benefits and the issues you need to consider if you are going to use one. But remember, before you even consider an ASP, you have to first consider what you want and need from a software application. If the ASP or traditional software approach cannot do what you need then you probably can't use it anyway. Assuming there is an ASP option for you, then you can consider the issues listed below.
Overview
Most people use software which is bought outright and installed on their own PC or network. With software provided by an ASP, the software instead resides on the provider's computer and you access it through the internet through your browser. And you 'rent' the software, for example paying a monthly charge, rather than buying it outright. Your data will also be stored on the provider's disk space.
What are the Potential Benefits
of this?
-
Pay-as-you-go. An ASP will be likely to charge you a mointhly rental which helps spread the cost.
-
No 'extras' needed: Other than the necessary communication equipment to connect to teh internet, you will not have the expense od dedictaed servers, IT support staff or system developers. Software upgrades and maintenance is provided by the ASP
-
Simpler Remote Access. You can access the system from anywhere in the world with an internet connection
-
Use
existing hardware. You will not be required to regularly upgrade your PCs, if you can connect to the internet, you will be able to run the programs you require.
-
Managed
Backups. The ASP will provide backups for you.
-
Faster deployment. No expensive on-site installations will be required, simply switch on the PC, connect to the internet or network and begin. .
-
"Total Cost of Ownership" (TCO). If you buy software you need to weigh-up all the costs of buying software along with any related hardware, maintenance, upgrades and so on. Renting software through an ASP costs less.
